Control Nintendo Switch 1 & 2 with Any PlayAbility Input

A PlayAbility Adaptive Receiver uses a Raspberry Pi Pico W or Pico 2 W as a bridge. PlayAbility sends the active profile's gamepad actions to the receiver over Bluetooth, and the receiver presents them to the console through USB.


What you need


  • A Raspberry Pi Pico W or Pico 2 W.
  • The current PlayAbility Adaptive Receiver firmware for Nintendo Switch.
  • A USB data cable and an available USB port or dock connection suitable for the console.
  • Bluetooth on the Windows computer running PlayAbility.
  • A PlayAbility profile with at least one gamepad action.


Download the current firmware from the PlayAbility Adaptive Receiver releases. Select the Switch USB build for your receiver board; firmware intended for another target may not work.


Flash the receiver


  1. Disconnect the receiver from USB.
  2. Hold BOOTSEL while connecting the receiver to the computer.
  3. Release BOOTSEL when a drive named RPI-RP2 appears.
  4. Copy the correct Switch .uf2 firmware file to the RPI-RP2 drive.
  5. Wait for the drive to disappear and the receiver to restart.


Pair the receiver with Windows


  1. Power the flashed receiver.
  2. Hold BOOTSEL for about five seconds, until its LED indicates Bluetooth pairing mode.
  3. Open Windows Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth.
  4. Select PlayAbility Receiver.
  5. Wait for Windows to show the receiver as paired.


Pairing normally only needs to be completed once. If Windows already contains an older receiver pairing and PlayAbility cannot connect, remove that pairing and repeat these steps.


Connect the receiver to the console


  1. Connect the receiver's USB data port to an available USB port on the console or its dock.
  2. Turn on the console.
  3. Open the console's controller-registration screen. On Nintendo Switch, this is normally Controllers → Change Grip/Order.
  4. If the console does not register the receiver automatically, activate the mapped LB and RB buttons together while this screen is open. The Nintendo layout sends them as L and R.


The receiver must remain connected to the console through USB while you use it.


Enable Receiver output in PlayAbility


  1. Open Connections in PlayAbility.
  2. Select PlayAbility Receiver.
  3. Under Button Layout, choose Nintendo Switch layout.
  4. Turn on Enable Bluetooth Serial Communication.
  5. Read the warning, then confirm the change.
  6. Find the PlayAbility Receiver control in PlayAbility's right navigation area and select it.
  7. Wait for the label to change to Disconnect PlayAbility Receiver.
  8. Turn on Main Output and Gamepad Out.


Enabling Receiver output disconnects PlayAbility's local virtual gamepad. This is expected: gamepad actions are being routed to the receiver instead of a game on this computer.


Verify the setup


  1. Open a console menu where a button press is safe.
  2. Activate one PlayAbility mapping assigned to A, B, or a D-pad direction.
  3. Confirm that the console responds.
  4. Release the trigger and confirm that the action releases.
  5. Test the remaining mappings one at a time.


Only gamepad actions are sent through this route. Map face, head, voice, keyboard, mouse, or physical-controller inputs to gamepad actions before testing them on the console.


Troubleshooting


PlayAbility cannot find the receiver


  • Confirm that Windows lists PlayAbility Receiver as paired.
  • Make sure the receiver is powered and running the Switch firmware.
  • Remove an old Windows Bluetooth pairing, pair the receiver again, and retry.
  • Close any other application that may be using the receiver's Bluetooth serial port.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the receiver, then select the right-navigation control again.


The receiver connects, but the console does not respond


  • Confirm that the receiver control says Disconnect PlayAbility Receiver.
  • Use a known-good USB data cable; a charge-only cable cannot carry controller data.
  • Confirm that you flashed the Switch USB firmware for the correct Pico model.
  • Open the console's controller-registration screen and activate LB and RB together.
  • Make sure Main Output and Gamepad Out are on and the active profile contains gamepad actions.


The face buttons are swapped


Return to Connections → PlayAbility Receiver and select Nintendo Switch layout.


PC games no longer detect PlayAbility's virtual controller


This is expected while Receiver output is enabled. Turn off Enable Bluetooth Serial Communication when you want to restore the local virtual-gamepad route.


Limitations and safety


  • Console support depends on the receiver firmware, USB cable, console port, and current console software.
  • Receiver output carries PlayAbility gamepad actions, not arbitrary keyboard or mouse events.
  • Keep the receiver connected and powered while playing. Avoid unplugging it while a mapped action is held.
  • PlayAbility does not change Nintendo account, game, or console-access requirements.
