Use a Physical Gamepad or Joystick as an Input
PlayAbility can use a physical controller as a trigger source. You can remap selected controls and, when wanted, pass the controller's other controls through to the PlayAbility virtual controller.
Prerequisites
- Connect a controller that your operating system recognizes, using USB, Bluetooth, or its supported receiver.
- If the mapping will produce gamepad output, make sure PlayAbility's virtual gamepad is available. Follow any driver or setup alert shown in the app.
- Load an editable profile.
Enable connected gamepad input
- Open Gamepads from the sidebar.
- Turn on Connected Gamepads.
- Confirm your physical controller appears as a device card.
- Decide whether to enable Forward for that controller:
- Forward on passes its unmapped buttons and axes to the PlayAbility virtual controller.
- Forward off stops that passthrough, but mappings that use the controller as a trigger can still run.
The PlayAbility virtual controller may also appear in the list and is identified as Virtual Gamepad. It is the output device, not a physical controller that you bind to a trigger.
The main Connected Gamepads switch must remain on. Turning it off stops controller input processing, including gamepad-trigger mappings.
Map a controller button
- Open Mapping.
- Select Add actions and add the action you want PlayAbility to produce.
- On the new row, select Select a trigger.
- Select Create a new trigger +.
- Under How do you want to control it?, select Gamepad.
- Under Which gamepad button?, select the physical button.
- Choose an Action Mode.
- Select Save.
Available digital controls include the face buttons, shoulders, Back, Start, stick buttons, D-pad directions, and Guide button.
Map an analog stick or trigger
The choices shown depend on the action:
- For an analog-axis action, select a left- or right-stick X or Y axis. This preserves analog movement.
- For an analog-trigger action, select the left or right physical trigger.
- For a digital action, select a stick direction such as Left Stick Up or Right Stick Left.
To use a stick direction:
- Edit the mapping and choose Gamepad.
- Under Which stick direction?, select a direction.
- Adjust Stick direction threshold. A higher value requires the stick to move farther before the action activates.
- Choose the action mode and select Save.
Use an axis input when you want variable control, such as steering or aiming. Use a stick direction when you want a full on/off action, such as a keyboard key or button.
Combine forwarding and remapping
When Forward is on, PlayAbility handles each physical control as follows:
- A control used by a mapping runs the mapped action and is not also passed through unchanged.
- A control with no mapping is forwarded to the matching control on the virtual gamepad.
This lets you keep the controls you can already use and replace only the controls you want to adapt.
If you want the physical controller to act only as a trigger source, leave its individual Forward switch off.
Verify the controller mapping
- Keep Connected Gamepads on.
- Confirm the correct profile is current.
- Enable Main Output and the required output type.
- Press or move the mapped physical control.
- Confirm the mapping responds and the target action activates.
- If Forward is on, test an unmapped physical control and confirm it passes through unchanged.
Troubleshooting and limitations
No gamepads are shown
Confirm the controller is visible to the operating system, then disconnect and reconnect it. Return to Gamepads after reconnecting. If it still does not appear, restart PlayAbility with the controller connected.
The controller appears, but the mapping does not trigger
Make sure the main Connected Gamepads switch is on. The individual Forward setting does not need to be on for mapped controls.
The mapped control also performs its original gamepad action
Confirm the mapping uses the same logical control reported by the controller. If the original action still passes through, turn the device's individual Forward switch off while testing.
Unmapped controls do not pass through
Turn on Forward for that physical controller and confirm the PlayAbility virtual gamepad is available. Forwarding targets the virtual controller; it does not repair a missing virtual-gamepad driver.
A stick direction activates too early or too late
Edit the mapping and adjust Stick direction threshold. Increase it to require more stick movement, or decrease it for easier activation.
The wrong controller activates the mapping
Gamepad mappings identify logical controls such as A, left stick X, or right trigger; they are not bound to a specific device ID. The same logical control on another connected controller can activate the mapping. Disconnect unused controllers when device-specific behavior is required.
The expected Gamepad option is missing
PlayAbility filters controller inputs by output compatibility. Buttons and stick directions are offered for digital actions; axes are offered for analog axes; physical triggers are offered for analog-trigger actions.
Platform setup is requested
Follow the setup message shown by PlayAbility. Linux can require one-time uinput access before the virtual gamepad works; macOS can require its virtual HID component; Windows can require the virtual-controller driver. Restart PlayAbility after completing the indicated setup.
