Control Nintendo Switch 1 & 2 with 8BitDo Micro

In this setup, the 8BitDo Micro pairs wirelessly with the Nintendo Switch 1 or 2 and stays connected to the PlayAbility computer with a USB data cable. The PlayAbility integration requires the firmware opened by the in-app updater.


What you need


  • An 8BitDo Micro.
  • A USB-C data cable.
  • A Nintendo Switch 1 or 2 and another controller for opening its pairing screen.
  • A PlayAbility profile with at least one gamepad action.


Install the required firmware


  1. Open Connections in PlayAbility.
  2. Select 8BitDo Micro.
  3. Select Update Firmware to open the bundled updater.
  4. Set the Micro's mode switch to D.
  5. Connect the Micro to the computer with the USB-C data cable.
  6. Follow every instruction shown by the updater.
  7. Do not disconnect the Micro until the updater reports that the operation is complete.
  8. Disconnect and restart the Micro when prompted.


Reinstalling different or stock firmware later may prevent PlayAbility from recognizing the Micro until the PlayAbility firmware is installed again.


Pair the Micro with Nintendo Switch 1 or 2


  1. Set the Micro's mode switch to S.
  2. Press its Home button to turn it on.
  3. Hold the Micro's pairing button until its status light starts cycling or blinking rapidly.
  4. On the console, open Controllers → Change Grip/Order.
  5. Wait for the Micro to appear and complete pairing.
  6. Confirm that its status light indicates a connection.


Button timing and indicator behavior can change with 8BitDo firmware. If these steps do not match the device, use the current 8BitDo Micro manual and support information.


Connect the Micro to PlayAbility


  1. Leave the Micro in S mode after it is paired with the console.
  2. Connect it to the PlayAbility computer with the USB-C data cable.
  3. Return to Connections → 8BitDo Micro.
  4. Turn on Enable 8BitDo Micro output.
  5. Read the warning, then confirm the change.
  6. Find the 8BitDo Micro control in PlayAbility's right navigation area and select it.
  7. Wait for the control to report Connected to....
  8. Turn on Main Output and Gamepad Out.


Enabling 8BitDo output disconnects PlayAbility's local virtual gamepad. The Micro becomes the gamepad-output route instead.


Verify the setup


  1. Open a safe menu on the Nintendo Switch 1 or 2.
  2. Activate a PlayAbility mapping assigned to A, B, or a D-pad direction.
  3. Confirm that the console responds.
  4. Release the trigger and confirm that the action releases.
  5. Test sticks and the remaining buttons one at a time.


Troubleshooting


PlayAbility reports that no compatible HID device was found


  • Confirm that the Micro is connected to the computer with a USB data cable.
  • Reconnect the cable directly to the computer instead of through an unpowered hub.
  • Close the firmware updater before trying to connect from PlayAbility.
  • Install the required PlayAbility firmware again.
  • Restart the Micro, then retry the 8BitDo Micro right-navigation control.


The Micro connects to PlayAbility, but the console does not respond


  • Confirm that the Micro is still paired with the console and set to S mode.
  • Reopen Controllers → Change Grip/Order and pair it again.
  • Turn on Main Output and Gamepad Out.
  • Confirm that the active profile contains gamepad actions.
  • Disconnect the Micro from PlayAbility, restart it, and reconnect.


PC games no longer detect PlayAbility's virtual controller


Turn off Enable 8BitDo Micro output to restore the local virtual gamepad.


A button works, but an analog action does not


Test the mapping in PlayAbility first. Confirm that it produces a gamepad stick or trigger action, then test that action on the console.


Limitations


  • The 8BitDo Micro cannot wake the console or provide motion controls or vibration.
  • ZL and ZR are sent as digital Switch trigger states rather than pressure-sensitive values.
