Control PS5 with PlayAbility, 8BitDo Micro, and Brook Wingman P5
This setup sends gamepad actions through a direct hardware route:
PlayAbility PC → USB → 8BitDo Micro → Bluetooth → Brook Wingman P5 → USB → PS5
The 8BitDo Micro remains connected to the PlayAbility computer by USB while it is paired wirelessly with the Wingman P5. This route works with native PS5 games and does not use Remote Play.
For network streaming instead of a direct hardware connection, use the chiaki-ng or PXPlay Remote Play guide.
What you need
- A Windows computer running PlayAbility.
- An 8BitDo Micro.
- A USB-C data cable.
- A Brook Wingman P5 Converter.
- A PS5 and another controller for changing settings or signing in when needed.
- A PlayAbility profile with at least one gamepad action.
This exact 8BitDo Micro and Wingman P5 setup has been tested by PlayAbility.
This guide applies to the Wingman P5. The newer Wingman P5s is a different product.
Update the Wingman P5
- On a Windows computer, open Brook's official Wingman Series download page.
- Download the current Wingman P5 updater.
- Follow Brook's instructions to install the latest Wingman P5 firmware.
- Wait for the updater to confirm completion before disconnecting the converter.
Firmware and PS5 system updates can affect third-party converter compatibility. If the setup stops working after an update, check Brook's current Wingman P5 support information before changing PlayAbility settings.
Install the required PlayAbility firmware on the Micro
- Open Connections in PlayAbility.
- Select 8BitDo Micro.
- Select Update Firmware to open the bundled updater.
- Set the Micro's mode switch to D.
- Connect the Micro to the computer with the USB-C data cable.
- Follow every instruction shown by the updater.
- Do not disconnect the Micro until the updater reports that the operation is complete.
- Disconnect and restart the Micro when prompted.
Use the updater opened by PlayAbility. Installing different or stock firmware may prevent PlayAbility from recognizing the Micro until the PlayAbility firmware is installed again.
Prepare the PS5 and Wingman P5
- On the PS5, open Settings → Accessories → Controller (General) → Communication Method.
- Select Use USB Cable.
- Connect the Wingman P5 directly to a PS5 USB port.
- Wait for its status light to finish starting up.
PS5 menu labels can vary with system software and language. If the setting is elsewhere, use Sony's current console instructions to find the controller communication method.
Pair the Micro with the Wingman P5
- Press and hold the Wingman P5 pairing or LED button until its light blinks rapidly.
- Set the Micro's mode switch to S.
- Press the Micro's Home button to turn it on.
- Hold the Micro's pairing button until its status light blinks rapidly.
- Keep the devices close together and wait for their lights to indicate a connection.
- If the PS5 asks which user is using the controller, select the correct account with another controller.
The Wingman P5 supports one connected controller at a time. Disconnect another controller from the converter before pairing the Micro.
Connect the Micro to PlayAbility
- Leave the Micro in S mode and paired with the Wingman P5.
- Connect the Micro to the PlayAbility computer with the USB-C data cable.
- Open Connections → 8BitDo Micro.
- Turn on Enable 8BitDo Micro output.
- Read the warning, then confirm the change.
- Find the 8BitDo Micro control in PlayAbility's right navigation area and select it.
- Wait for the control to report Connected to....
- Turn on Main Output and Gamepad Out.
Enabling 8BitDo output disconnects PlayAbility's local Windows virtual gamepad. The Micro and Wingman P5 become the active gamepad-output route.
Verify the setup
- Open a safe PS5 menu.
- Activate a PlayAbility mapping assigned to a D-pad direction or face button.
- Confirm that the PS5 responds.
- Release the trigger and confirm that the action releases.
- Test the remaining buttons, sticks, and triggers one at a time before starting a game.
Troubleshooting
The Micro and Wingman P5 do not pair
- Confirm that the Wingman P5 is connected to the PS5 and has finished starting.
- Disconnect any other controller paired with the Wingman P5.
- Restart both devices, place the Micro in S mode, and repeat the pairing steps.
- Keep the devices close together during pairing.
- Update the Wingman P5 with Brook's current firmware.
The Micro pairs, but the PS5 does not respond
- Confirm that the PS5 communication method is set to Use USB Cable.
- Reconnect the Wingman P5 directly to a different PS5 USB port.
- Sign in or assign the controller to the correct PS5 user.
- Re-pair the Micro with the Wingman P5.
- Check Brook's current Wingman P5 support information after any PS5 system update.
PlayAbility cannot find the Micro
- Use a USB data cable, not a charge-only cable.
- Connect the Micro directly to the computer instead of through an unpowered hub.
- Close the firmware updater before connecting from PlayAbility.
- Reinstall the PlayAbility firmware with the in-app updater.
- Restart the Micro and retry the 8BitDo Micro control.
The PS5 responds to the Micro, but not to PlayAbility
- Turn on Enable 8BitDo Micro output, Main Output, and Gamepad Out.
- Confirm that the active profile contains gamepad actions.
- Wait for the 8BitDo control to report Connected to....
- Test the mapping in PlayAbility, then retry a simple button in a safe PS5 menu.
Limitations
- This route supports standard gamepad actions, but not controller audio, touchpad gestures, motion controls, vibration or haptics, or adaptive-trigger effects.
- Games that require a PS5-specific control may need a Wingman P5 mapping or another supported controller. Test each required action before playing.
