Set Up the PlayAbility Adaptive Receiver
The PlayAbility Adaptive Receiver uses a Raspberry Pi Pico W or Pico 2 W to send the gamepad actions from your active PlayAbility profile to another device. This guide covers the shared receiver setup; use the dedicated console guide for the final connection to a Nintendo Switch or Xbox Adaptive Controller.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi Pico W or Pico 2 W.
- The correct PlayAbility Adaptive Receiver firmware for your target device.
- A USB data cable suitable for the receiver and target device.
- Bluetooth on your Windows computer.
- A PlayAbility profile with at least one gamepad action.
Download the current firmware from the PlayAbility Adaptive Receiver releases. Choose the firmware named for the device you intend to control.
Flash the receiver firmware
- Disconnect the receiver from USB.
- Hold the BOOTSEL button while connecting it to your computer.
- Release BOOTSEL when a drive named
RPI-RP2appears. - Copy the correct
.uf2firmware file to theRPI-RP2drive. - Wait for the drive to disappear and the receiver to restart.
Reflash the receiver whenever the target-device guide requires a different firmware build.
Pair the receiver with Windows
- Power the flashed receiver.
- Hold BOOTSEL for about five seconds to enter Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Open Windows Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth.
- Select PlayAbility Receiver.
- Wait for Windows to show the receiver as paired.
Windows creates the Bluetooth serial connection that PlayAbility uses. Pairing normally only needs to be completed once.
Connect the target device
- Disconnect the receiver from your computer's USB port after flashing, if required by your target setup.
- Connect its USB data port to the Nintendo Switch, PC, or Xbox Adaptive Controller described in the relevant device guide.
- Power on the target device.
The USB connection and firmware must both match the target. Do not assume that firmware intended for one device will work with another.
Enable the receiver in PlayAbility
- Open Connections in PlayAbility.
- Select PlayAbility Receiver.
- Under Button Layout, choose:
- Nintendo Switch layout for Nintendo-style button positions.
- Xbox Adaptive Controller layout for Xbox-style button positions.
- Turn on Enable Bluetooth Serial Communication.
- Read the warning, then confirm the change.
- Find the new PlayAbility Receiver control in PlayAbility's right navigation area and select it.
- Wait for its label to change to Disconnect PlayAbility Receiver. This indicates that the serial connection is active.
Enabling Receiver output disconnects PlayAbility's local virtual gamepad. Turn Receiver output off again when you want PlayAbility to control a game directly on this computer.
Verify the connection
- Make sure Main Output and Gamepad Out are on.
- Activate a simple mapped action such as A, B, or a D-pad direction.
- Confirm that the target device responds.
- Release the trigger and confirm that the action also releases.
Test one button before adding sticks, triggers, or more complex mappings.
Troubleshooting
PlayAbility says no receiver was found
- Confirm that Windows lists PlayAbility Receiver as paired.
- Make sure the receiver is powered and running the correct firmware.
- Remove an old Bluetooth pairing, pair the receiver again, and retry the PlayAbility Receiver control.
- Close other applications that may be using the receiver's Bluetooth serial port.
- Disconnect and reconnect the receiver, then retry.
The receiver connects but the buttons are wrong
Return to Connections → PlayAbility Receiver and select the layout that matches the target device.
The target receives no actions
- Confirm that the receiver control says Disconnect PlayAbility Receiver, which means it is connected.
- Turn on Main Output and Gamepad Out.
- Confirm that the active profile contains gamepad actions.
- Check that the USB cable carries data, not power only.
- Confirm that the receiver firmware matches the target device.
Games on this computer no longer detect the virtual gamepad
Receiver output disables the local virtual gamepad. Turn off Enable Bluetooth Serial Communication to restore it.
Limitations and safety
- Receiver setup requires compatible firmware and hardware; it is not a software-only connection.
- The available in-app button layouts are Nintendo Switch layout and Xbox Adaptive Controller layout.
- Device-specific restrictions still apply. Follow the dedicated Xbox Adaptive Controller or Nintendo Switch article for target-specific steps and limitations.
- Use a known-good USB data cable and avoid changing cables or firmware while an input is held.
