Use One Webcam with PlayAbility and OBS

Many webcam drivers cannot provide the same physical camera feed to two applications at once. OBS Virtual Camera can act as the shared video source: OBS opens the physical webcam, while PlayAbility opens the virtual camera produced by OBS.

What you need

• OBS Studio with Virtual Camera available.
• A webcam that works in OBS.
• PlayAbility installed on the same Windows computer.

Use the current OBS Virtual Camera guide if the controls in your OBS version differ from the steps below.

Add the webcam to OBS

1. Open OBS Studio.
2. Create or select the scene that should supply video to PlayAbility.
3. In Sources, add a Video Capture Device.
4. Select the physical webcam.
5. Position the source so the full face remains visible.
6. Check that the image is bright, sharp, and updating normally.

If the webcam is already an OBS source, reuse the existing source instead of trying to open the physical device a second time.

Start OBS Virtual Camera

1. Find Start Virtual Camera in the OBS Controls dock.
2. If needed, open Virtual Camera settings and choose the program, preview, scene, or source that contains the webcam.
3. Select Start Virtual Camera.
4. Leave OBS and Virtual Camera running.

Any crop, transform, scene transition, or visual filter included in the selected OBS output is also sent to PlayAbility.

Select the virtual camera in PlayAbility

1. Open Settings in PlayAbility.
2. Select General.
3. Under Webcam, select the device named OBS Virtual Camera or the equivalent name provided by the installed OBS version.
4. Select Start Face Detection in PlayAbility's right navigation area.
5. Confirm that the PlayAbility preview updates.

Start OBS Virtual Camera before selecting it in PlayAbility. If it does not appear in the list, close and reopen PlayAbility after starting the virtual camera.

Verify the setup

1. Confirm that OBS displays the physical webcam.
2. Confirm that OBS reports Virtual Camera as started.
3. Confirm that OBS Virtual Camera is selected under Settings → General → Webcam in PlayAbility.
4. Start face detection.
5. Move your head and make one configured facial gesture.
6. Confirm that PlayAbility tracks the movement or gesture.
7. Start an OBS recording or stream and confirm that both applications continue receiving video.

Use Face Tester in PlayAbility if you need to confirm individual facial expressions before relying on them in a profile.

Troubleshooting

OBS Virtual Camera is not listed in PlayAbility

• Start Virtual Camera in OBS first.
• Refresh the PlayAbility webcam list by reopening Settings → General.
• Restart PlayAbility while OBS Virtual Camera remains on.
• Update or repair OBS using its official installer if Virtual Camera is missing from OBS itself.

PlayAbility shows a black or frozen image

• Confirm that the physical camera source is active in the OBS scene.
• Confirm that OBS Virtual Camera is still running.
• Use this launch order: OBS, physical camera source, Virtual Camera, then PlayAbility.
• Close another application that may have exclusive access to the physical webcam.
• Stop face detection, reselect OBS Virtual Camera, and start detection again.

OBS says the physical webcam is already in use

1. In PlayAbility, select OBS Virtual Camera, not the physical webcam.
2. Close other apps that may be opening the physical camera.
3. Restart OBS and add the physical source before starting PlayAbility face detection.

Face or head tracking is unreliable

• Keep the full face visible in the OBS output.
• Reduce aggressive cropping, blur, color effects, or animated transitions.
• Improve front lighting and avoid strong backlighting.
• Use a stable scene or source rather than an output that changes during play.
• Lower OBS processing load if the virtual feed stutters.

Performance drops while OBS and PlayAbility are running

• Reduce the OBS canvas resolution or frame rate.
• Disable unnecessary OBS filters.
• Close unused OBS previews, browser sources, or encoders.
• Use PlayAbility's performance settings if the computer has multiple GPUs.

Limitations

• OBS Virtual Camera carries video only. Select the microphone separately under Settings → General → Microphone in PlayAbility.
• Stopping OBS or Virtual Camera interrupts PlayAbility's video input.
• The virtual-camera feed includes the transforms and filters selected in OBS; effects that hide facial features can reduce detection quality.
