Configure PlayAbility Settings
PlayAbility saves most settings as you change them. The Settings page is divided into General, Design, Advanced, What's New, and Your account. This guide covers the operational settings in General and Advanced.
Select the webcam
- Open Settings → General.
- Under Webcam, select the camera PlayAbility should use.
- Start face detection from PlayAbility's controls.
- Optionally turn on Show face mesh on preview.
The face-mesh option is unavailable until face detection is running.
Select the microphone
- Under Microphone, select the device used for voice recognition.
- Start voice detection.
- Speak a configured command and confirm that PlayAbility detects it.
Changing the microphone while voice detection is running restarts recognition with the new device.
Choose the voice-recognition language
- In Voice Recognition, open the language list.
- Select the language model that matches your commands.
- Wait for the model download to finish if it is not installed.
- Confirm that the selected model says it is ready.
PlayAbility keeps one downloaded voice model at a time. Selecting an uninstalled model can remove the previous model before downloading the new one.
Use Clear voice model cache if a model repeatedly fails to load. If voice recognition was running, PlayAbility attempts to restart it after a language or cache change.
Configure automatic startup
Under Auto-Start, choose which parts should start automatically:
- Turn on Auto-start face detection for face and head controls.
- Turn on Auto-start main output to enable remapped output at launch.
- Turn on Auto-start voice detection for voice commands.
- Turn on Auto-start overlay when the on-screen overlay should open automatically.
- Turn on Start with Windows to launch PlayAbility when you sign in to Windows.
Only enable services you use. Camera, microphone, overlay, and output startup settings are independent.
Configure the system tray and profile backup
The System tray section controls whether PlayAbility stays active when its window closes or minimizes. See Use the System Tray While Playing for the complete procedure.
The Profile backup section can export all profiles to JSON or import profiles from a backup. This is a Pro Edition feature. Overlay profiles are not included in this backup and must be exported from Overlay settings.
Require the user to face the camera
- Open Settings → Advanced.
- Under Face Gestures, turn on Require facing camera.
- Adjust Facing Camera Sensitivity.
- Test the same gesture while facing the camera and while looking away.
Lower angle values are stricter and require you to look more directly at the camera. Higher values allow more head movement.
Choose performance behavior
- Under Performance Settings, keep Internal GPU (Recommended) unless you have a specific graphics issue.
- Choose Discrete GPU (Advanced) only when testing shows it is needed.
- Select Restart Now when PlayAbility reports that a restart is required.
- Turn on Suspend UI when window is inactive to pause rendering on performance-intensive pages while PlayAbility is not focused.
GPU changes do not take effect until PlayAbility restarts. Battery or energy-saving modes can also reduce tracking performance; follow any power warning shown by the app.
Choose an update track
- Under Update Preferences, choose Stable for thoroughly tested updates.
- Choose Beta only if you want early access to upcoming features.
Beta builds may be less stable and may show an unsigned-app warning on Windows.
Other Advanced settings
The Advanced tab also contains:
- Focused app rules for automatic profile switching and output allow/block lists.
- Mute input, a Windows-only low-level keyboard and mouse hook.
Use their dedicated helpdesk articles before enabling them.
Review changes
Select What's New to read the in-app changelog. Open Your account to review account and subscription information.
Verify your settings
- Restart PlayAbility after changing the GPU mode or startup behavior.
- Confirm that the selected webcam and microphone remain selected.
- Check that only the chosen auto-start services begin.
- Test face, voice, and output controls before opening a game.
- Confirm the selected update track under Update Preferences.
Troubleshooting
A camera or microphone is not listed
- Grant camera or microphone permission in Windows.
- Reconnect the device and reopen Settings.
- Close another application that has exclusive control of the device.
- Restart PlayAbility.
Voice recognition does not start after changing languages
- Wait for the download to reach 100%.
- Confirm that the model says it is ready.
- Select Clear voice model cache, then select the language again.
- Check the internet connection for a model that is not installed.
GPU mode did not change
Select Restart Now or exit and reopen PlayAbility. The setting is applied on restart.
A setting is missing
Some settings are platform-, subscription-, or feature-dependent. Mute input appears only when Windows input muting is supported, and profile backup requires Pro Edition.
