Create Your First Profile in PlayAbility

A profile is a saved control setup. It contains the mappings that connect inputs such as face gestures, head movement, voice, keyboard, mouse, or a physical gamepad to gamepad, keyboard, mouse, or PlayAbility actions.

Create the profile

Open Profiles from the sidebar.
Select Create your first profile. If another profile already exists, select Add a new profile instead.
On Select a base template, browse the templates or use Filter by output.
Choose a starting point:

Select Starter for an empty profile.
Select a template such as Head and Face to Gamepad, Head and Face to Keyboard, Head and Face to Mouse, or Racing Game for example mappings you can customize.

Select Use this template.

PlayAbility creates the profile, makes it the current profile, and opens it in Mapping.

Add your first mapping

A mapping has two parts: the action PlayAbility will produce and the trigger that will activate it.

In Mapping, select Add actions.
Choose an output category such as Gamepad, Keyboard, Mouse, or Settings.
Select one or more actions, then select Add.
On the new action row, select Select a trigger.
To build a new trigger, select Create a new trigger +.
Under How do you want to control it?, choose an available input type.
Select or enter the specific input and adjust any settings shown.
Choose an Action Mode when needed, then select Save.

Use PlayAbility on Xbox through Remote Play or Cloud Gaming

Accepted Answer

PlayAbility does not stream Xbox games itself. It creates a virtual gamepad on the Windows computer; the Microsoft client or browser must detect that controller and forward it to the remote session.

Remote Play streams games from an Xbox console you control.
Cloud Gaming streams eligible games from Microsoft's cloud service.

Availability, account requirements, subscriptions, supported games, and client behavior are controlled by Microsoft and can vary by region.

Prepare PlayAbility

Select or create a profile containing gamepad actions.
Open Connections and turn off PlayAbility Receiver and 8BitDo Micro output if either is enabled.
Turn on Main Output.
Turn on Gamepad Out.
Activate a simple mapped button.
Confirm that Windows detects PlayAbility's virtual controller before opening the streaming session.

You can verify the controller in a local PC game or by pressing Win+R, entering joy.cpl, and opening the detected controller's properties.

Use Xbox Remote Play

Follow Microsoft's current Xbox Remote Play instructions to enable remote features on the console and prepare the Windows client or supported browser.
Sign in with the Microsoft account that has access to the console.
Start the remote-play session.
Click or select the stream so the client has focus.
Keep PlayAbility running with Main Output and Gamepad Out enabled.

Use PlayAbility on PlayStation through Remote Play

Accepted Answer

PlayAbility creates a local Windows virtual gamepad; it does not connect directly to a PlayStation console or provide the video stream. The remote-play client must accept that virtual controller and forward it to the console.

Sony's current Windows documentation lists DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense, and DualSense Edge controllers for the official PS Remote Play app. It does not promise support for PlayAbility's Xbox-style virtual controller, so the official client may not accept it. Some third-party clients may accept standard XInput controllers, but they are not developed or supported by PlayAbility.

What you need

A PS4 or PS5 configured for Remote Play.
A PlayStation account with access to that console.
A reliable network connection.
A trusted Windows remote-play client that accepts a standard virtual controller.
A PlayAbility profile containing gamepad actions.

Prepare PlayAbility

Select or create a profile with the gamepad controls the game requires.
Open Connections and turn off PlayAbility Receiver and 8BitDo Micro output if either is enabled.
Turn on Main Output.
Turn on Gamepad Out.
Activate a simple mapped button.
Confirm that Windows detects the virtual controller.

To test in Windows, press Win+R, enter joy.cpl, then open the detected controller's properties. Resolve local virtual-controller problems before configuring Remote Play.

Control Nintendo Switch 1 & 2 with Any PlayAbility Input

A PlayAbility Adaptive Receiver uses a Raspberry Pi Pico W or Pico 2 W as a bridge. PlayAbility sends the active profile's gamepad actions to the receiver over Bluetooth, and the receiver presents them to the console through USB.

What you need

A Raspberry Pi Pico W or Pico 2 W.
The current PlayAbility Adaptive Receiver firmware for Nintendo Switch.
A USB data cable and an available USB port or dock connection suitable for the console.
Bluetooth on the Windows computer running PlayAbility.
A PlayAbility profile with at least one gamepad action.

Download the current firmware from the PlayAbility Adaptive Receiver releases. Select the Switch USB build for your receiver board; firmware intended for another target may not work.

Flash the receiver

Disconnect the receiver from USB.
Hold BOOTSEL while connecting the receiver to the computer.
Release BOOTSEL when a drive named RPI-RP2 appears.
Copy the correct Switch .uf2 firmware file to the RPI-RP2 drive.
Wait for the drive to disappear and the receiver to restart.

Pair the receiver with Windows

Power the flashed receiver.
Hold BOOTSEL for about five seconds, until its LED indicates Bluetooth pairing mode.
Open Windows Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Add device → Bluetooth.
Select PlayAbility Receiver.
Wait for Windows to show the receiver as paired.

Connect PlayAbility to Nintendo Switch with 8BitDo Micro

Accepted Answer

In this setup, the 8BitDo Micro pairs wirelessly with the Nintendo Switch and stays connected to the PlayAbility computer with a USB data cable. The PlayAbility integration requires the firmware opened by the in-app updater.

What you need

An 8BitDo Micro.
A USB-C data cable.
A Nintendo Switch and another controller for opening its pairing screen.
A PlayAbility profile with at least one gamepad action.

Install the required firmware

Open Connections in PlayAbility.
Select 8BitDo Micro.
Select Update Firmware to open the bundled updater.
Set the Micro's mode switch to D.
Connect the Micro to the computer with the USB-C data cable.
Follow every instruction shown by the updater.
Do not disconnect the Micro until the updater reports that the operation is complete.
Disconnect and restart the Micro when prompted.

Reinstalling different or stock firmware later may prevent PlayAbility from recognizing the Micro until the PlayAbility firmware is installed again.

Pair the Micro with Nintendo Switch

Set the Micro's mode switch to S.
Press its Home button to turn it on.
Hold the Micro's pairing button until its status light starts cycling or blinking rapidly.
On the console, open Controllers → Change Grip/Order.

Find Reliable Face Gestures with Face Tester

Face Tester shows how strongly PlayAbility currently detects each supported face movement. It does not create a mapping or save a threshold; use its readings to decide what to configure later in Mapping.

Prepare the camera

Open Settings > General.
Under Webcam, select the camera you want to test.
Position your face near the center of the preview.
Use steady front lighting and avoid strong backlighting.
Start Face Detection beside the webcam preview.

Test in the same camera position, lighting, and seating posture you expect to use while playing.

Compare gesture scores

Open Face Tester from the sidebar.
On Face Gestures Tester, select Mouth, Brows, or Eyes.
Relax your face and observe the resting value for a gesture.
Make that gesture comfortably and observe its active value.
Return to a neutral expression and repeat the movement several times.
Compare other gestures and look for one with:

A low and stable resting value.
A clearly different value when intentional.
Similar results on repeated attempts.
Little effort or strain.

Note the resting and intentional values for the strongest candidates.

The live bars use a 0–100 scale. A gesture with a wide, repeatable gap between rest and activation is normally easier to configure than one whose values overlap.
